To be a good fit for the Safety Director opportunity, you will have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or another related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Quick question for you - click here
  • 10+ years of experience in the administration of safety and risk management programs or occupational safety and health programs supporting similar key responsibilities.
  • Experience in the construction industry (preferred) or in organizations requiring remote management of safety programs in multiple locations.
  • Direct experience in both creating and implementing safety programs that improve KPIs.
  • Familiarity with construction safety work rules contained in Supervisor Safety Manuals as well as OSHA Part 1910 and 1926 regulations.
  • Knowledge of EMR, TRIR and DART.
  • An understanding of Illinois Workers Compensation laws and reporting requirements.
  • Technical savvy, including:
    • Proficiency in developing training presentations in PowerPoint.
    • Familiarity with construction management / ERP software.
    • The ability to work with data to identify trends, problems, etc.
    • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Significant knowledge in loss control and claims management acquired through documented hands-on experience.
Just as important will be the following competencies and characteristics:
  • High emotional intelligence to constructively work through issues.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • A firm grasp on policies and procedures, and a process and metrics-driven approach.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly verbally and in writing.
Preferred but not required:
  • Professional certification, such as CSP or CHSP.
  • Experience in mechanical construction/HVAC a plus.
  • OSHA train-the-trainer credentials.
  • Knowledge of heavy industry hazards.
You should expect to be out in the field once a week for observation, training and program implementation. We'll provide a company vehicle, and overnight travel will be minimal.

A&R has been family-owned since 1925, and our ongoing growth has created the need for greater structure. We are working with a strong consultant who has provided a framework. Reporting to the President, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the Company’s corporate safety program within that framework. Your goal will be to achieve an EMR of less than 0.7.

You'll work cross-functionally with all business units, assisted by a Training Coordinator/Onsite Safety Representative. In addition, you'll work through foremen at various job sites.

More specifically, you will:
  • Partner with management to define the safety strategy for the company and execute that strategy.
  • Lead all safety aspects of the Company’s Operational Excellence/Lean Construction implementation.
  • Develop metrics and KPIs to display visual indicators of performance accurately and promptly.
  • Conduct periodic on-site safety inspections, analyzing work practices to determine safe and efficient methods of performing work.
  • Determine and document root cause of safety incidents, implement corrective or preventative actions and follow up to ensure they continue to be followed.
  • Define and execute safety training for all employees.
  • Oversee injury and claims management as needed to include (but not limited to) developing injury/illness treatment protocol, staying abreast of latest status of injuries and claims and management of OSHA record keeping.
  • Ensure all safety policies and procedure comply with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Assume responsibility for defense against OSHA citations.
  • Complete and file notices of contest and represent the company in all safety and health inspections conducted by OSHA.
  • Oversee and help coordinate the region’s delivery of training programs for managers, supervisors and field employees when required, and develop new training programs as needed.
  • Perform special projects and complete all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the organization.
